Using Your Resources - Melissa Morris

This summer, I was frantic about finding an internship. All I could think was, "If I don't have experience I'll never get hired!" I searched the Internet high and wide but didn't find anything that caught my eye. Then, I remembered that Iona offered, GAELlink. After scrolling through the possibilities I came across a cosmetic company that was looking for a marketing assistant. Even though I am a PR major, it sounded interesting. What made it more interesting was that it was paid! I applied, they called the next day, and I was hired on the spot! I interned with Sisley Cosmetics during the whole summer. It's a very small office and everyone works very closely with each other. Luckily, I got a lot of experience and was constantly busy.

We also have our own PR woman. She handles everything; events, product launches, etc. I started talking to her about how she found her way into PR and ever since then, we clicked. After that day, I started doing both marketing and PR work. My internship was supposed to end September 1 but a week before my final day, they offered me a PR internship. I now strictly work doing PR. My boss has become my mentor. She has taught me more than you would ever be able to learn in a class room. She knows a lot of people and I've got to experience a lot.

It is very important to use what is available for you (GAELlink). This one internship has opened a lot of doors for me and it has given me a lot of opportunities.
