Disney Sails to Alaska by: Laura Ruocco

On September 11, 2009, Disney announced plans to sail to Alaska in the summer of 2011. This is the first time that the Disney Cruise Line will be going to Alaska, but also the first time that the Disney Cruise Line will be sailing the West Coast.

The cruise will be a seven-night outdoor adventure with plans to stop in Tracy Ann, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. At these locations guests will be able to visit old gold mines, fish for gian salmon, interact with the native wildlife, and experience the culture and history of Alaska.

Bookings for the summer 2011 adventure will start at $939 per person for a standard inside stateroom, based on double occupancy (before taxes and fees). Vacationers can start booking their adventure on Septemebr 28, 2009, and have 18 different departure dates to choose from.

The ship will offer a new cafe on top of the ship with panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass windows for spectaculr views of the Alaskan frontier everywhere you look.

While this trip sounds like the ultimate way to experience a destination uncommon to many people's first choices, is the price to much? $1,000 per person for a room that doesn't even have a view is a lot of money; as a family friendly company, I think Disney might be asking to much for this adventure. If you compare to other summer excurssions that Disney offers- such as a seven-night Mexican Riveria starting at $639- this trip is without a doubt a much more expensive option. Will the price of the trip influence it's success?

I think it is a good idea to start the bookings this year- that way before any major construction takes place, Disney Cruise Line can determine if their idea will be a success.

The success of sales, however, might not be as high as Disney may excpect because prior to researching a topic to blog about, I had not once heard of Disney's new cruise line intentions. If sales are to begin in a mere fifteen days, Disney's PR people should step up their game.
