Military Public Affairs: Lisa Konkus

I have always been interested in not for profit public relations, but just recently I have been looking into public affairs for the military. My cousin is in the Army and even when I was younger I had actually thought about joining a branch of the military myself. The Public Affairs Officer (PAO) is responsible for developing a working relationship with reporters and other media representatives, maintaining a robust community relations program, keeping contact with other government agencies, and keeping internal and external publics informed on issues that may affect them. I had also always wondered if you had to be part of the military to do public relations work for them? I found that The Public Affairs community of the United States Armed Forces consists of active duty and reserve officers, enlisted personnel, civilians and consultants to provide support for managing the flow of news and information for the military. I was excited to learn that they allow civilians to work for them since I feel it would be way too late to join because I am less then two semisters away from graduating. I will continue to look into all different types of public relations jobs inorder to keep my options open to different opportunities when I graduate. I want to lean about all the different feilds PR that I can work, I do not want to just learn about one area.
