Social Media Paves Way to Employment - By : Alyssa Cedeno
In the latest edition of The Forum, The Publication of the Public Relations Student Society of America newspaper, I read an article that caught my attention. The article was entitled Social Media Paves Way to Employment by Rachel Esterline, Boston University. The article told how most people get a job by sending in a resume, but how you don’t need a resume to get a job now-a-days. All you need is a blog and a podcast instead. Allie Osmar, a 24-year-old Michigan State University graduate, learned this first hand. Osmar was offered a job in Edelman’s digital education group after connecting with Phil Gomes, a senior vice president at Edelman Digital, through PROpenMic.org. Osmar now develops online courses to integrate digital thinking and social media across the company. To be honest, this weekly assignment of posting a PR related class blog annoyed me at first. But after reading this article I realized this weekly assignment will be helpful for my future career. Although a blog or podcast takes a lot of time and energy, I plan to keep it going, and to be passionate about it. Having a blog or podcast is a door opener to opportunities that once seemed unattainable.
