As the flu season approaches, many are concerned, more so than any other year. The Quad-City Times in Springfield, Illinois is taking many procautions, including purchasing mass amounts of hand sanitizer and hiring a PR agency in Chicago to help coordinate an educational campaign. The H1N1 flu bug is expected to hit hard within the next few weeks so the Illinois Department of Public Health has used about $90,000 in federal funds for this educational campaign. ((Bbut my question is, how will this educational campaign help with the actual spread of such a virus? It won't prevent people from getting and spreading the infection!))
Jasculca/Terman, the Chicago based PR agency, is aiming the campaign at the season flu and H1N1, as they are different. One of the main efforts is a tour by Public Health chief Damon Arnold to various parts of the state regarding vaccinations and hygiene. Another aspect of this iniative is the use/distribution of hand sanitizer. Secretary of State Jesse White's office is estimating the state will need about 4,000, 1-liter bottles of sanitizer in the coming year. ((Another question, is hand sanitizer really the way to go? According to another blog, www.scienceblog.com , "Alcohol rub sanitizers can prevent the transfer of health-care associated pathogens (Gram negative bacteria) better than soap and water; however, alcohol rub sanitizers are not appropriate for use when your hands are visibly dirty or contaminated with blood."
