Blog Site and Blogging as a PR Tool: Lisa Konkus

Today I found a blog called Online Public Relations Thoughts. This is a site where people can submit entries on public relations and communications ideas and trends. I found this blog site very interesting because most of the blogs are coming from people who work in the field of communications, which is a work field I hope to get into after I graduate. There are blogs ranging from Irresponsible Twittering to Methods of Great PR. After looking at this blog site I began to research blogging as a PR tool and found that 8.5 million people blog everyday. Also a new blog is started every seven seconds. At the same time there are PR and legal hoops to jump through before an upper level exec takes the plunge into posting his or her thoughts on the Internet. Blogging needs to be monitored, as a PR practitioner you cannot write up a blog that may start a rumor or even spark a crisis. When writing a blog you should not try to fool the readers with a sales pitch or disguise your blog as a press release or advertisement. They should be conversational and relatable. By writing in a style that reflects your personality, along with your expertise in the industry, journalists will consider you to be an industry expert. I’ve never really realized the value of blogging, but I now understand that to be able to blog is a valuable skill to have. Blogs are a new and effective way to manage public relations. Companies should have blogs to allow consumers to ask questions and voice their opinions. A company that responds to these blogs communicates well and wants to achieve customer satisfaction.
